In practice we use both for the same work: taking out deadwood, raising the canopy, and thinning weight. Pruning is the selective cut at the right point on the branch; trimming is the broader shaping. We do both on the same visit.
Do you top trees?+
No. Topping — cutting the whole top off a tree — leaves big weak stubs that rot and regrow as dangerous limbs. We make selective cuts back to the branch collar instead, which keeps the tree sound.
When should a silver maple be trimmed?+
Silver maple and cottonwood benefit from taking out deadwood and thinning heavy limbs before they get too long. If a limb is over your roof and catching wind, that's the one to address before the next storm, not after.
